Now more than a decade into his papacy, it’s been a busy year for Pope Francis. In 2023 the 86-year old pontiff has continued to work for peace in Ukraine, named twenty-one new cardinals, prepared for a major synod of bishops this fall, been hospitalized twice, and dismissed talk of a potential resignation. Amid all that, last month he also did something that made me realize that I’d missed a significant milestone: he issued an apostolic letter in celebration of the 400th birthday of my favorite scientist.
